Homeless Animals in Houston, Texas

The Amsale Gessesse Memorial Foundation is involved in assisting animal protection groups and individuals who are involved in the rescue of stray dogs and cats in the Houston area. At this time, the municipal government facilities that exist are inadequate to handle the problem. Because they are so inadequate, dogs and cats that end up in these shelters are usually euthanized. The Foundation has been involved in rescuing, boarding, and providing funding for medical care for stray and homeless animals since late 2006.
As in many other parts of the United States, the predominant dog breed that is being abused and/or abandoned to die or get killed in the Houston area is the Pit Bull. In cooperation with a group of concerned individuals, AGMF has undertaken a program to educate the public about this much maligned breed. As part of the education program, Dr. Anteneh Roba, the Foundation’s Founding President, co-hosted a show with Ms. Melanie Blake, member of the Foundation Board, about Pit Bulls Oct 29th on GO-VEGAN-TX (KPFT) highlighting the issues related to Pit bulls.
Our immediate goal is to continue and, if possible, increase assistance to save this breed and other homeless dogs from hunger, starvation, abuse, and death. The Foundation’s ultimate goal is to assist a coalition of interested individuals to establish a sanctuary in the Houston area that would be adequate to handle the large number of homeless and stray animals.
